THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...

I really enjoy wandering around the historical areas of Singapore, Joo Chiat, Everton Road and Duxton amongst many, admiring all of the beautiful heritage shophouses. Singapore is often admired as such a modern progressive city, filled with stunning shiny contemporary architecture, glistening in the sun and dripping in eco friendly greenery, however this little island nation is also extremely proud of it’s Peranakan heritage.

I have lived in a few different properties in Singapore all with different styles of architecture, from a modern Sentosa townhouse, a Black and White house and now a B & W apartment… but I have also been lucky enough to live in one of these heritage shophouses on ‘Instagram famous’ Koon Seng Road - one of the most photographed streets on the island with it’s colourful ice cream shades and ornate plasterwork adorning the building’s facades.

In contrast though, for this piece, I wanted to celebrate another sometimes seen quieter, gentler colour palette of whites greys, beiges and off-whites, these grand old dames often adorned with decorative Peranakan tiles, wooden shutters and front yards full of potted sweet smelling white Jasmine and Frangipani trees.

In this design, I’ve mixed sun dappled photos of white houses from different areas with various ‘objet d’art’ from my growing vintage collection. A couple of delicate hand painted rice paper parasols, traditionally used by women to shield themselves from the rays of the tropical sun. A lovely pair of sturdy wooden chairs photographed outside of one of the houses where locals will sit sipping hot tea from vintage tea flasks, playing Mahjong in the shade of the undercover spaces out front, traditionally called the ‘5 foot way’. A beautiful foldaway paper fan adorned with songbirds found in a market shop sits centrally in the sky, the birds singing from the rooftops.

I also love to add in some illustrative elements and enjoyed painting some traditional ‘rolling clouds’ that are layered over some vintage embroidered white silk to make up the elements in the sky.

All the images are my own and shot in various locations on my walking adventures around the Little Red Dot I call home.
