THE STORY BEHIND THE PRINT...

Each of my ‘Little Chinese Windows’ depicts a curated vignette of objects arranged as a still life image with image details layered over the top.

In this instance I have photographed a stunning tea set depicting the famous Chinese ‘Willow’ pattern but in a beautiful dark red on cream instead of the predictable blue. An unashamedly feminine design, the tea cups sit on a delicate pink silk, bought from the Western Markets in Hong Kong and have a puffy silk peony sitting inside them. The little red feathered bird came from the bird & flower market, also in Hong Kong. The tea set was bought from an antique shop in Brooklyn, New York and shipped to me in Singapore. The ‘Willow’ pattern although definitely inspired by Chinese design was actually designed by two British men in 1780, potter Thomas Turner and engraver Thomas Minton.
